The first regatta of the South and Mid Kerry Rowing season took place on sunday 19th of June hosted by Sive Rowing Club. In tough rowing conditions crews in the various races gave us some great action with some front contenders already showing in the first regatta of the season they have a lot of work done and look very determined this year. The awesome display of the Portmagee Under 14 Girls was simply put breath taking and coxed by the very cool cox himself David Hussey they took the Gold in a packed race. The senior ladies of Sneem put in another brilliant performance and they powered through the pack 9 boats took to the starting Line and Mike Shea cox (Out of Retirement) encouraged his Ladies to victory, Valentia Senior Ladies finished second and for the first time ever Fenit Senior Ladies taking part in their first regatta in the traditional four oar took the bronze. The closest race of the day was the Under 16 Girls with only 2 boat lengths covering the entire field with Cromane leading from the break water to the finishing line with all boats just off their stern and proved to be a very exciting race. The Cahersiveen Senior Men put in another powerful display leading a very large field from almost start to finish and their cox Mike O Connor never relented keeping his crew under pressure but the hard work was done early and in truth dictated from early on dismissing any challenge to the buoy and had enough of a lead to come home with ease. I could not finish without mentioning a fantastic display of the Ballinskelligs Under 16 Men who lead this race from start to finish and were simply unstoppable and are one of those crews who seem to be in flying form without getting carried away it is the first regatta of the season and there is a long way to go but this crew looked Class.
Well done to Sive Rowing Club for organising a very successful and Kathleen McCarthy of Sive Rowing Club the new PRO of the South and Mid Kerry Rowing Assoc was delighted with the support and the competition within the races all omens well for the season ahead.
